Atlantic Book Fair Dinner

Last Sunday I was delighted to attend the Atlantic Book Fair dinner to chat about my upcoming book. I’m a BIIIIG introvert, so walking into the cocktail hour alone was daunting, and I only recognized a few people. I hadn’t met my publisher rep from HarperCollins Canada, but a kind soul pointed her out and she was amazingly lovely. I got to hold the arc of WHEN THE WORLD FELL SILENT, met lots of incredible booksellers, and chatted a lot with Tom Ryan, who was also there to talk about his new book, The Treasure Hunter’s Club from Simon and Schuster. I *think* my presentation went just fine and while introvert me always finds these kinds of things challenging, I’m inevitably always so glad I did them because once I get to know people I really enjoy them. Not long until this baby is out in the world… July 20 in ebook and audio, August 6 in paperback in Canada! (August 1 in the US and UK!)

Prepare to fall in love…

Many many years ago, I held a first chapter contest for unpublished authors, and the winner would get me as a mentor for the year. Soraya was one of my first mentees and went on to sell with Harlequin Romance – where I was writing. She then also wrote stories for St. Martin’s – and then I went there too! Then I kept writing rom and she branched out in an entirely new direction – historical fiction! Now, here I am, a total fan of her hist fics with my first one coming out in July. She has gone on to have a BRILLIANT career and when I asked if she’d read and blurb my book, she readily agreed. Thank you, Soraya – and congratulations on your new release, THE BERLIN SISTERS!

A Bonus from When the World Fell Silent: Recipe

With the release of WHEN THE WORLD FELL SILENT only 2 months away, I wanted to share a little something from the book.
I didn’t know when I first had it that War Cake originated during WW1. While there’s shortening in this recipe, it uses no butter, eggs, or milk. My mother-in-law first made it for me, and I LOVED it as at the time I wasn’t a fan of fruit cake (that has also since changed!). In fact, when we did Groom’s Cake for our wedding (a tradition to look up if you’re unfamiliar), we did War Cake instead of Fruit Cake.
It’s spicy and tasty and fantastic with a cup of tea. I don’t make it often, but I usually make one around Christmas time. 🙂
Here is the recipe!

A stunning historical fiction debut…

It feels weird to call this a debut, when I’ve been publishing for so long, but I have to admit, writing historical fiction is VASTLY different than writing romance, and in addition to the process, the journey to publishing it has also felt like that “first time” all over again, with tons of excitement.
Eliza Knight is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, and she sent along her thoughts about WHEN THE WORLD FELL SILENT:

“WHEN THE WORLD WENT SILENT is a richly detailed look into the lives of women on the home front during WWI, and how their lives were irrevocably changed following a tragic ship collision that resulted in an explosion in the Halifax Harbour Narrows. Donna Alward has penned a stunning historical fiction debut you don’t want to miss. A fascinating tale of resilience!” ~Eliza Knight, USA Today and international bestselling author of Starring Adele Astaire

Thank you, Eliza, for reading this labour of love and giving it your thumbs up! For those of you who might want to grab Eliza’s books, she just had a new one out with Denny S Bryce called CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS, about the friendship between Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald. And her next is coming soon – THE QUEEN’S FAITHFUL COMPANION.

My first ever published book – only 99 cents!

This month, the first book I ever published is on sale for just 99 cents! It’s an Ugly Duckling story, where the “nice guy” from high school finishes first, and the popular girl proves she’s got more to offer than a good time.

You can get your copy for $0.99 at Amazon and if you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read it for free!

No one wants to take a risk on The Girl Most Likely to Have Fun…except the one person in the world she’d rather not ask.

Katie Buick dreams of opening her own restaurant, but finding a financial backer is proving impossible. Until she makes a final, desperate plea to businessman Ric Emerson—the boy whose heart she broke in their senior year.

Ric’s worked hard to shed his high school image and become a success, and when Katie’s business proposal crosses his desk, he’s on board. What happened before is water under the bridge, right? But as they build the business, chemistry simmers between them, blurring the lines between personal and professional.

Can Ric trust Katie with his heart again, and give them a second chance at happiness?

Love lost and found…

I want to say a huge thank you to Bryn Turnbull, who generously read an advanced copy of WHEN THE WORLD FELL SILENT! I’m a big fan (check out The Last Grand Duchess and The Paris Deception) and am looking forward to reading her brand-new story (The Berlin Apartment, coming in late August!)

Here’s her review…. it’s a pinch-me moment for me, you know?

“In the span of a few short minutes, everything changes for Nora Crowell and Charlotte Campbell, the brilliant protagonists of Donna Alward’s latest historical novel. Set against the tragic backdrop of the Halifax Explosion, When the World Fell Silent is an enchanting story of love in all its forms, lost and found in the shattered remains of the city.”
